Wayne McMillan with the City of Social Circle asks....
I would like to get advice on a request for multiple cremains being buried in a single plot. Is this a common practice? What is the maximum per plot? Do you charge the same opening fee per cremains? How do you mark the cremains?
The City of Savannah permits a maximum of 4 cremations per space. Unless the cremated remain is in an urn vault, locating the cremains is difficult. Therefore, it is imperative that you accurately document the placement of the cremains. We divide our spaces and label the placement of the cremains accordingly. For example, a cremation placed at the top of space 1 would be labeled T-1 in our database.
We also allow 1 cremation in a space containing a traditional burial. Depending on the location of the traditional burial, the cremation is placed at either the head or the foot of the grave.
Our fees are the same regardless of the number of cremations in a space. Additional cremains still require a hole to be dug and still require records kept for eternity.
Does a city have to have an ordinance concerning the burial of cremated remains?
