Over the summer, he was a star of Bonaventure Cemetery tours — a dainty fox so tame he drank water from a tour guide’s cupped hand. Now, Buddy, as he’s called, is gaining greater celebrity after local photographer Michael Grafton posted photos on Facebook last week of the fox lounging near a gravestone.

A horrific accident in a cemetery left a 4-year-old Texas boy dead. Levi Driver was at the Ector County Cemetery in Odessa, Texas, with his family when a 100-year-old tombstone fell on him as he play below. The child was rushed to the hospital, but doctors were unable to save the boy who suffered fatal injuries during the tombstone accident.

CBS 7 reports that the large century-old tombstone fell onto the 4-year-old boy as he played below the headstone. The police report indicates that Levi Driver was at the cemetery with his family when the accident took place. The family says the boy was playing nearby when the tombstone quickly fell onto the child. People in the community say the horrifying tragedy could have been avoided had the cemetery taken previously reported concerns about the safety of the aging tombstones seriously.

Adriana Segovia says that her father’s headstone is routinely damaged in the cemetery and that tombstones are frequently destroyed. The headstones can become wobbly and easy fall when touched. Adriana says she has reported on two separate occasions her concerns about the state of some of the tombstones, but her concerns were disregarded. Adriana says the tombstones become slanted and loose when those cutting the grass hit the stones.

“This is how my father’s looks, it’s not the first time that we’ve come to find stuff destroyed. If they are doing it to the ones on the floor, I’m pretty sure the big ones are also getting hit and stuff when they are cutting the grass.”

Adriana said when she heard about the incident, the first thing that came to mind was the tombstone was likely slanted from being hit by the mower.

“That was the first thing that came to my mind, it was probably loose and it fell on him.”

News West 9 notes that the incident occurred in the oldest part of the cemetery, which houses graves of those who died over a hundred years ago. Sam Brijalba, the Safety and Risk Management Coordinator for Ector Count, says that the recent wet weather could be to blame for the fatal tombstone accident.

“That might be a factor as far as the moisture because we’ve had some recent rains but I can’t say that with any certainty that that was a contributing factor. This is the most unfortunate and tragic accident. I have very limited information at this time. We are in the preliminary stages of gathering information as to how and why this happened. We would like to express our heartfelt and sincerest condolences to all family members. This is all I have at this time.”

This isn’t the first time a tombstone has killed a person. The Inquisitr previously reported on a man who was killed by his mother-in-law’s tombstone as he decorated it for Easter.
